Two lawsuits were filed in the U.S. on Friday against President Trump and other key U.S. government officials over the denial to certain American taxpayers of their right to receive CARES Act "Economic Impact Payments" because they are married to non-American citizens who, though taxpayers, don't have Social Security numbers. 

Less than a month after it lobbied Congress, the Treasury and the IRS to include Americans who are resident abroad in a plan to provide U.S. citizens with a "stimulus payment" to help them weather the coronavirus pandemic, the American Citizens Abroad is now just as forcefully urging Washington officials to fix the problems thousands of expats are having in accessing their money.

The American Citizens Abroad says it is working with its contacts at the IRS to resolve problems that an unknown but apparently significant number of expatriate Americans have been having in their attempts to make use of the federal tax agency's online tools for getting their so-called CARES Act recovery rebate payments. 

Aware that many American expats are likely to find the process by which they're expected to go about accessing the approximately US$1,200 they have been told they are probably entitled to receive as a result of the recently-announced Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), American expat groups have begun posting webinars aimed at helping them. 

A number of the best-known and most-visible American expat organizations have been mobilizing over the weekend to ensure American expats around the world understand their options for receiving a "Recovery Rebate" from the U.S. government, worth as much as US$1,200 per person, as a result of a US$2trn stimulus package signed into law by President Trump on Friday.

The American Citizens Abroad has called on Congress, the Treasury and the IRS to include Americans who are resident abroad in any formal efforts to help U.S. citizens who have been affected by the current coronavirus pandemic.
