In what might be seen as a timely move on the part of the Democrats Abroad, given the extent to which FBARs have been in the news this past week, the organization submitted a seven-page document to the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations ahead of hearings scheduled for this past Wednesday (March 8), in which it urged House lawmakers to make "needed" and "substantial adjustments to FinCEN Form 114, the Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts or 'FBAR'." 

A little over one month into the new year, a global challenge to the United States' citizenship-based tax regime is emerging on several fronts, as awareness continues to grow of the tax regime's major role in the many problems U.S. expats and so-called accidental Americans continue to struggle with.

If you were thinking of planning a protest by expatriate Americans against the U.S. system of citizenship-based taxation, it's difficult to think of a better day to do it than the date when expatriate American expats are obliged to file their U.S. tax returns by – which is to say, June 15 (two months after U.S. taxpayers' taxes are due). 

The Democrats Abroad's Taxation Task Force today is unveiling a damning report on what life is like, from a financial and tax perspective, for the millions of American citizens who live overseas.

A federal appeals court has temporarily halted a recently-unveiled Biden administration program designed to forgive hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of federal student loan debt held by American citizens – even as government officials had evidently been struggling to enable those living overseas to apply, as a result of technical difficulties having to do with accessing and submitting the necessary forms.

This Thusday (April 14) the Democrats Abroad's Taxation Task Force is hosting a Zoom webinar for expat Americans that will address "the ins and outs of using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) versus the Foreign Tax Credits (FTC)" when filing one's U.S. taxes.

The deadline is approaching for U.S. citizens living abroad to participate in a major Democrats Abroad survey, aimed at revealing exactly what such expats think about the way the U.S. taxes them. 

For the second time in less than a month, the Democrats Abroad has written to top officials at the U.S. Treasury Department and IRS, this time urging them to make it possible for more American expats to more easily avail themselves of the so-called Recovery Rebate that is being made available to them, as it is to Homeland Americans, as a result of the CARES Act.
