The Democrats Abroad U.K. has unveiled plans for what it says will be its first-ever "Tax Day," set to take place on the first Saturday in the month of October, and says it's lined up a number of well-known American tax and wealth experts to participate.

The Democrats Abroad, which represents members of the U.S. Democratic Party who are resident overseas, is planning to mark International Tax Filing Day with a “CallStorm,” which is basically an event that looks to involve expat Democrats in calling up their Congressional representatives’ offices and voicing their concerns over key issues affecting expat Americans – in this case, the need to move to a residence-based tax regime. 

Representatives from the Taxation Task Force of the Democrats Abroad said they managed to have a total of 18 meetings with lawmakers in Washington, DC during their just-completed three-day “door knock” there, including eight meetings with Republican Congressmen and ten with Democrats.

The Democrats Abroad, the official organization of the Democratic Party for American citizens living permanently or temporarily outside of the U.S., has reported that it is in discussions with Virginia Rep. Don Beyer on a range of issues, including residence-based taxation (RBT).

The Democrats Abroad has unveiled plans to visit members of Congress for three days later this month, as part of its ongoing efforts to advocate for a switch to a residence-based tax regime from the U.S.’s current citizenship-based tax system.

Americans who are living abroad and are frustrated by the myriad tax and citizenship issues they're facing can do more than complain, an audience of such Americans was told the other evening in London.

 Its latest visit to Capitol Hill to call on members of Congress revealed some areas of possible progress for issues of concern to U.S. expats, the Democrats Abroad’s Taxation Task Force has told its party members.

Some 97% of a cross-section of American expatriates surveyed by the overseas arm of the Democratic party in January and early February report that they have "serious problems addressing their U.S. tax filing obligations" every year.

The Democrats Abroad, which represents members of the U.S. Democratic Party who are resident overseas, has launched a major research project it says is aimed at gathering information it plans to use in its efforts to reform the way American expats are currently taxed.

It used to be so easy: Americans moved overseas for work or other reasons, paid taxes – or didn’t – and then either returned home, or stayed on.
