The EU's Data Protection Board is to "again look into" the degree to which the processing and transferring of the personal data of European citizens to the U.S. by EU countries, in compliance with the U.S. tax evasion prevention law known as FATCA, could violate the bloc's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), an EU official has said.

 The Paris based Association des Américains Accidentels (Association of Accidental Americans, or AAA) has filed two legal complaints simultaneously in Belgium and Luxembourg, in which it demands the “immediate halt to the transfer of European citizens’ personal data to the United States”.

Time magazine, one of the longest-established and best-known weekly magazines in the U.S., has become the latest mainstream media outlet to run a major article about America's so-called "accidental Americans," and their struggles to maintain bank accounts in the countries in which they live and are citizens of, as a result of the controversial U.S. law known as FATCA. 

The founder and president of the Paris-based Association des Américains Accidentels (Accidental Americans Association, or AAA) has formally requested that the U.S. Ambassador to France see to the "re-open the renunciation services and the FBU (Federal Benefits Unit)" in France.

The Paris-based Association des Américains Accidentels (Accidental Americans Association, or AAA) has launched a crowd-funded campaign to finance a legal challenge to what it says is the "exorbitant" US$2,350 fee that the U.S. charges those wishing to renounce their U.S. citizenship.

The U.S. government on Thursday published its second-largest-ever quarterly list of names of Americans who have renounced their citizenships – in spite of the fact that the processing of renunciations by U.S. consulates and embassies around the world has all but ceased, according to U.S. citizenship renunciation experts, who help dual citizens looking to give up their U.S. passports, and in some cases Green Cards, to do so.

The Paris-based Accidental Americans Association today filed another lawsuit – its second in a little more than a year – in a Paris court, alleging that the way France's banks are complying with the U.S. tax law known as FATCA is causing them to be discriminated against by making it difficult if not impossible for them to maintain a French bank account.

Fabien Lehagre, the U.S.-born and France-resident president and founder of the Paris-based Accidental Americans Association, has called on U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to "drastically...reduce the costs associated with the renunciation procedure", in order that so-called accidental Americans could give up their U.S. citizenship if they wished to.

On Tuesday – the last day before all non-American banks and financial institutions around the world were officially required to supply the U.S. authorities with the so-called Tax Information Numbers of all their American clients, or potentially be in breach of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act – French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire issued a statement reassuring France's banks with respect to any American account-holders whose TINs they still don't have.

The Paris-based Accidental Americans Association today filed a complaint with the European Commission against the way France is using an inter-governmental agreement with the U.S. to enforce the so-called Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which, the AAA says, is in breach of European Union law.
