A French Assembly report is calling on the French government to engage in further negotiations over FATCA, and if necessary abandon it altogether, if it is unable to resolve the "extra-territorial tax" problems currently being faced by thousands of French citizens who also happen to be Americans. 

The Paris-based Accidental Americans Association filed a legal complaint yesterday against a number of French banks, alleging that the banks are actively discriminating against French citizens who also happen to have American citizenship, in violation of European banking laws.

The Accidental Americans Association, a Paris-based group that campaigns for fairer treatment for those who left the U.S. as babies or never lived there but who say they are nevertheless burdened by unfair U.S. tax obligations, has launched what it calls a "major lobbying campaign" to educate American lawmakers of these "accidentals'" plight. 

 President Donald Trump didn’t show up to an event held yesterday on the Île aux Cygnes (Isle of Swans) in Paris, to which he had been invited – but then, he didn’t make it to a scheduled wreath-laying ceremony to honor French and American World War I dead at a French cemetery  the day before, either. 

The efforts by Fabien Lehagre’s Association des Américains Accidentels and other Europe-based groups of accidental Americans to seek the assistance of their local governments in their battle against the U.S.’s extraterritorial tax claims on them are the latest in a number of similar campaigns in recent years by other similar unwilling holders of U.S. citizenship.

European lawmakers last week gave a potentially significant boost to a growing band of Europe-based “accidental Americans,” who have been campaigning to engage European government officials to back their request to be allowed to cast off their American citizenship (and thus their taxation by the U.S.) more easily and cheaply than is currently possible under U.S. law.
